FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my shutters cost?
Our basic pricing structure is simple (these prices include VAT)

There will be additional cost depending on:

Do the louvres open and close?
Each louvre is pivoted at either end and all the louvres in each panel are joined together by a tilt rod. This rod allows the angle of all the louvres in a single panel to be adjusted together to suit your needs.

Can interior shutters improve home security?
Shutter Shop louvred shutters can help improve the security of your home. When they are across a window they make it difficult or impossible for people to see in, depending upon the angle of the louvres. When in use our solid shutters provide a high degree of privacy. However, please note that as with all wooden products our shutters, they will not withstand a concerted effort to break them.

Why choose Shutter Shop to supply my shutters?
The shutter product – The Shutter Shop has been involved in the interior shutter market for over fifteen years. We are one of the original shutter companies and have far more experience than virtually any other UK company. We also have extensive experience in overseas sales. For many years, we have manufactured our own shutters, and have become probably the largest plantation shutter manufacturer in Europe. Now our shutters are now made in China to the highest quality (better than we could afford to make them in the UK) and we have a considerable say in the quality control processes. We can confidently say that our product is second to none.

Our shutter service - We pride ourselves on the level of service that we can provide to all our customers. We understand that plantation shutters are a new concept to many customers, and that customers need a fair amount of information about the product and how it works and we aim to do this. Many of the new shutter companies, that have sprung up, are just looking for a quick sale, without understanding the product or appreciating the needs of their customers. The Shutter Shop want you to feel able to come back to us again in the future and to speak well of us to your friends and family.

How long is the lead-time for my order?
All our shutters are custom made to fit your windows precisely, so it takes between 4 to 6 weeks from the date we receive your deposit for us to receive them from the factory.

How long is the lead-time for my order?
Our shutters are made in a dedicated factory in China. Normally our goods are shipped to the UK by sea. However, in the event of real urgency, we can arrange for specified items to be air-freighted to the UK which generally means delivery of the goods to us takes about 2 weeks from receipt of your deposit. The air freight service charge is an extra £65 per square metre (incl. VAT) on the shutters supplied with a minimum single order charge of £325 per square metre (incl. VAT).

Can I put your shutters in a bedroom, as a form of blackout?
Louvred Interior Shutters are not a total blackout, due to the tolerances required for slat movement and the opening and closing of panels. However, all our panels have rebated edges which will stop light seeping through where the panels meet. As a matter of routine we fit many bedrooms and nurseries, where there is obvious sensitivity to light penetration from outside.

Can shutters be fitted onto UPVC windows?
On flat windows (not bay windows) this is very feasible as we side fix into the plaster of the recess, therefore this does not affect the PVC. However, on UPVC bay windows there are two problems:

This section very much refers to UPVC bay windows, specifically. Other forms of bay windows rarely give these sorts of problems. We fit shutters to a large numbers of bay windows every month. Our tier on tier style shutters, for example, lend themselves particularly to Victorian terraced bay windows.

What is the payment system?
Terms - For Supply, Measure and Fit Service, a deposit of 50% is required on placing of the order, with payment of the balance on the day of the installation once this is complete.

Terms for Supply Only, a deposit of 50% is required on placing of the shutter order with payment of the balance prior to delivery of the goods to you.

Do you offer a Measure and Installation Service?
Yes, we pride ourselves on our knowledgeable and experienced in-house survey and fitting team. We like to discuss the nature of an enquiry prior to a site visit. For a reasonable additional cost we can provide a full fitting service using our own fully trained fitters. We will only fit shutters where we have carried out a survey prior to order. Should you choose to install shutters yourself into an opening previously surveyed by our team, we can accept no liability for the failure of a satisfactory installation. In essence, should you wish, we can do everything for you from start to finish - all you will have to do, is choose the style and colour of your shutters, from the selection of samples that the surveyor brings to your house.

Can I fit the shutters myself?
Yes, We offer a Supply Only mail order service (see How to Order shutters), whereby the shutters are made, based on your measurements, and then sent directly to you for self-fitting.

How do I fit them?

What can I do if my window is too wide to support the weight of the shutters?
A tracking system can be installed along which the shutters run, which supports the weight of the shutters. We would normally recommend the use of a tracking system where there are more than 3 panels hinged together. See picture of full height shutters under Shutter Styles or, for more information on our tracking system please contact us.

Can I have my shutters painted in a colour of my choice? We can paint your Basswood shutters or Lockwood shutters to match any Dulux or Farrow and Ball paint finish at between a 15% to 20% surcharge, depending on the wood. Other paint manufacturer's colours can be matched at an increased cost, the pricing of which can be calculated on a case by case basis.

Can my shutters be re-sprayed if I don't like the colour? If they are Basswood shutters or Lockwood shutters, then yes they can be re-sprayed subject to their condition. The re-spray costs will vary according to your requirements so please contact us to obtain a specific quote. We do not provide a re-spray service for Craftwood shutters. Only under exceptional circumstances will we undertake the re-spraying of shutters not supplied by us.

How do I clean my shutters?

How long will my shutters last?
Shutters that we installed 20 years ago (manufactured to a lower quality in comparison to the product that we now sell) are still in good working order. We have found that many customers now regard the installation of shutters as actually adding value to their homes. Firstly, the shutters long life-span is increasingly regarded as providing a saving on the need to replace constantly eg curtains, and secondly, their self-evident style is becoming increasingly popular and therefore they are much sought after.

What is my warranty?
