Measuring and choosing your shutter
Each shutter is made to your approved measurements and specification. Tell us the size, the number of panels and the colour, and choose the finishing touches, or we can decide on those together.
Read the measuring guideLouvre width
Louvre width is mainly down to personal preference. Wider louvres let more light into the room when open, and larger louvres are seen as more contemporary, smaller ones as more traditional. The backs of the louvres must be free from obstructions such as window handles, so choose a width that suits the space behind the shutter frame. Deeper frames are available to take wider louvres.
Mid rail
A mid rail is a horizontal section of solid wood within the shutter panel. It can be a structural requirement, giving strength to panels over a certain height, and a design feature, perhaps to cover window handles and latches. You set its position as a distance in mm from the bottom.
Panels and configuration
The number of panels depends on the type and style of the window, the position of the vertical glazing bars and whether the panels need to fold back at 90 or 180 degrees. The configuration sets how the shutters open and fold back. Remember: more panels means more stiles and less light.
Tilt rod
Choose a hidden, central or offset tilt rod. All are easy to use and there is no right or wrong choice, it is about which you prefer. The hidden rod is built inside the shutter stile, so it carries a small surcharge.
Frames
- Z frame
- Sits at the edge of a deep recess with fixings through the side. The Z wraps around the recess, so its lip hides any inconsistencies if the recess is not square. You will not be able to use the sill unless the panels are open. Give us the narrowest recess measurements, tolerances taken.
- Camber Deco frame
- A decorative face-fixed frame that looks a little like an architrave, for fitting outside the recess. Add 135mm to the reveal width to give the overall size of the shutter and frame.
- Insert L front fix frame
- Our most popular face-fixing frame, often used on sash and recessed windows. It is 22mm at the front and 38mm at the back and fits inside or outside a recess. Give us the overall size for the shutter and frame, and we calculate the panel widths and hinge spacing.
- 3 or 4 sided frame
- We can make a shutter without one side of frame, for example a full-height shutter framed left, right and top only. Café-style shutters come with a 3 sided frame as standard: left, right and bottom.

How much do Café Style Java Waterproof shutters cost?
Café Style Java Waterproof shutters start from £324 per square metre as a DIY product price, and you pay for the area of the shutter (width × height). The designer works out the exact price as you choose your size, panels, colour and frame, and shows it before you add the shutter to your basket.
What sizes can I order?
You can order Café Style Java Waterproof shutters from 250mm to 2200mm wide and from 500mm to 3000mm high. Enter the finished shutter and frame dimensions in millimetres, and read our measuring guide before ordering. For a larger window, our team can advise on splitting it across more than one shutter.
Which colours can I choose?
Java Waterproof is available in 12 paint colours. You pick your finish in the designer, and you can order free colour samples first if you want to see them in your room.
Which louvre sizes are available?
Online you can choose 64mm, 76mm or 89mm louvres. Wider louvres let in more light when open and look more contemporary, while smaller louvres feel more traditional. Make sure handles and other obstructions leave enough room behind the shutter for the louvres to tilt. A hidden tilt rod is available for a 10% surcharge.
Do I need a mid rail?
No. A mid rail is not offered on café style java waterproof shutters, so the panels run without a horizontal rail.
Which frames are available?
You can choose Bull Nose Z, Camber Deco, Insert L or Deep Plain L frames, and a 3 or 4 sided frame. If you are not sure which frame suits your window, choose "Don't know" and we will advise, or email sales@shuttershop.co.uk with a photo of the window.
