Measuring and choosing your shutter
Each shutter is made to your approved measurements and specification. Tell us the size, the number of panels and the colour, and choose the finishing touches, or we can decide on those together.
Read the measuring guideMid rail
A mid rail is a horizontal section of solid wood within the shutter panel. It can be a structural requirement, giving strength to panels over a certain height, and a design feature, perhaps to cover window handles and latches. You set its position as a distance in mm from the bottom.
Panels and configuration
The number of panels depends on the type and style of the window, the position of the vertical glazing bars and whether the panels need to fold back at 90 or 180 degrees. The configuration sets how the shutters open and fold back. Remember: more panels means more stiles and less light.
Frames
- Z frame
- Sits at the edge of a deep recess with fixings through the side. The Z wraps around the recess, so its lip hides any inconsistencies if the recess is not square. You will not be able to use the sill unless the panels are open. Give us the narrowest recess measurements, tolerances taken.
- Camber Deco frame
- A decorative face-fixed frame that looks a little like an architrave, for fitting outside the recess. Add 135mm to the reveal width to give the overall size of the shutter and frame.
- Insert L front fix frame
- Our most popular face-fixing frame, often used on sash and recessed windows. It is 22mm at the front and 38mm at the back and fits inside or outside a recess. Give us the overall size for the shutter and frame, and we calculate the panel widths and hinge spacing.
- 3 or 4 sided frame
- We can make a shutter without one side of frame, for example a full-height shutter framed left, right and top only. Café-style shutters come with a 3 sided frame as standard: left, right and bottom.

How much do Café Style Solid Shaker shutters cost?
Café Style Solid Shaker shutters start from £324 per square metre as a DIY product price, and you pay for the area of the shutter (width × height). The designer works out the exact price as you choose your size, panels, colour and frame, and shows it before you add the shutter to your basket.
What sizes can I order?
You can order Café Style Solid Shaker shutters from 250mm to 2200mm wide and from 500mm to 2500mm high. Enter the finished shutter and frame dimensions in millimetres, and read our measuring guide before ordering. For a larger window, our team can advise on splitting it across more than one shutter.
Which colours can I choose?
Solid Shaker is available in 15 paint colours and 17 wood stains. You pick your finish in the designer, and you can order free colour samples first if you want to see them in your room.
Do Café Style Solid Shaker shutters have louvres?
No. Solid Shaker shutters have solid panels instead of louvres, so there is nothing to tilt. You control light and privacy by opening and folding the panels back, which gives a traditional look and more privacy when they are closed.
Do I need a mid rail?
No. A mid rail is not offered on café style solid shaker shutters, so the panels run without a horizontal rail.
Which frames are available?
You can choose Bull Nose Z, Camber Deco, Insert L or Deep Plain L frames, and a 3 or 4 sided frame. If you are not sure which frame suits your window, choose "Don't know" and we will advise, or email sales@shuttershop.co.uk with a photo of the window.
How do I order Café Style Solid Shaker shutters online?

What are solid panel shutters?
Solid panel shutters are made-to-measure shutters with solid hardwood panels instead of operable louvres, available in either Solid Raised or Solid Shaker style. With no louvres to tilt, each panel is simply opened to let in light or closed to block it out, rather than mixing light and privacy the way louvred shutter styles do. They are available in café, tier-on-tier and full-height versions, and can be designed and bought online or measured and fitted by The Shutter Shop’s own team.
What is the difference between Solid Shaker and Solid Raised Shutters?
Although very similar, there are small differences to the final design aesthetic of Solid Shaker and Solid Raised Shutters. Solid Raised Panels have a more pronounced, decorative look with the centre of the panel raised above the frame. The raised panel adds depth and texture, making them feel more substantial and traditional. Shaker Style Panels are simpler, with a flat or slightly recessed centre. The design is clean and minimalist, offering a more modern or rustic look, depending on the finish and materials used.
Which should I choose Solid Shaker or Solid Raised?
Your choice really comes down to the style you're aiming for. If you want something with detail and depth, solid raised might be the better option. If you prefer something cleaner and more minimalist, Shaker could be the way to go. Both are timeless and offer a classic look.
What are café-style shutters?
Café-style shutters, also known as half-height shutters, cover only the lower window panes or section of the window. The top half stays clear, so you get privacy at eye level while daylight still pours in above. Like all our styles, they are made to measure for your window and can be ordered in a wide range of colours and stains, or custom colour matched to your home.
How long do they take, and are they guaranteed?
The lead time is approximately 12 weeks from order confirmation for standard shutters, and it can increase at busy times of the year. Special shapes and custom colour matches take up to 14 weeks, and air freight at a surcharge reduces the lead time to approximately 6 weeks. All our shutters are guaranteed for 5 years, whether you buy online or choose our measure and fit service.
